First Workings is a small growing nonprofit, founded in 2015, whose mission is to help high achieving, high potential students from some of New York City’s most underserved and underrepresented communities to acquire social capital and broaden their horizons. Our program includes training, placement in competitive internships, and comprehensive support in an effort to help students foster professional relationships and grow their professional network. We currently partner with 12 high schools and 35+ internship partners over a variety of industries. 

This summer, we’re placing over 40 rising high school seniors in internships and are hiring a Program Intern to help coordinate a successful summer between our students and internship partners. We’re looking for a dynamic individual who is excited by the opportunity to work alongside a small team on all aspects of a growing nonprofit. This person will work directly with the Corporate Engagement Manager and Program Coordinator, assisting with different program and operational efforts. The Program Intern will be based out of the First Workings Office and will be full time with an expected start date of May 28, 2020, running through mid-August, 2020.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Assist with curriculum design and co-facilitating summer student training to familiarize interns with professional workplace expectations
  • Actively manage a small cohort of students during their internship period and deliver feedback on performance when necessary 
  • Ensuring stakeholder success leading up to and during internships by communicating with interns regularly, checking in with company supervisors, and handling any issues that may arise in the workplace quickly and effectively
  • Creating and assembling documents provided to interns and company partners to ensure smooth on-boarding and ultimately a successful partnership
  • Planning and creating various content for our social media accounts to continue building First Workings’ brand awareness and community engagement strategies with key stakeholders
  • Updating website with new designed content and pictures
  • Researching topics, writing and distributing monthly online blog for our Alumni Network
  • Researching possible grant and foundation opportunities to increase fundraising efforts
  • Monitoring inventory and purchasing supplies needed for office, mailing, training days, student internships, and other events
  • Collaborating with other team members on other projects and assignments as needed

Qualifications and Required Skills: 

  • Undergraduate or graduate-level student with a degree concentration in social sciences, education, or another relevant field
  • Experience working in nonprofits, especially smaller start-up organizations
  • Experience and passion working with high school aged youth
  • Experience and/or interest in website design, communications, and research
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a small team. Enjoys working in a positive, collaborative, and inclusive environment 

Compensation, location, hours, and benefits:

  • Full time, Monday-Friday, 40 hours a week
  • $18 an hour
  • Flatiron District
